Your FAQ Page is an SEO Powerhouse

We can all use a quick win, especially when it comes to SEO, which is a long game. A Frequently Asked Questions page is a powerhouse, because you can answer many questions that you know are being asked in one place and then provide internal links to encourage more interaction with your site.

What is a Frequently Asked Questions page?

A Frequently Asked Questions page provides short answers to common questions your potential clients might have. This is a natural opportunity to include relevant keywords and phrases that you want to rank for. Having these relevant questions and answers in one place gets users information quickly. Your site’s authority and trustworthiness improve when users read the content on your pages.

When people go to your site and quickly click off this sends a negative signal to Google that they did not find what they are looking for. Google is the number one search engine because they have figured out how to gauge searchers’ intent so it can serve them the most useful content for what they are looking for. When you are served up in search and someone bounces off your page because they did not find what they were expecting you can get dinged by Google.

Having an FAQ page can reduce bounce rates by providing quick answers, keeping visitors engaged, and encouraging them to explore further. This extended engagement sends positive signals to search engines, indicating that your site is valuable and worth ranking higher.

How to create a Frequently Asked Questions page?

To get started think of questions that clients or potential clients commonly ask. You can use Google’s People Also Ask section to find questions. For the example below I typed in What is SEO? I got search results for sites that answer this question but if you scroll down there is usually this People Also Ask section which gives you other questions around this topic that people ask.

The people also ask question section on google search results gives you commonly asked questions on a topic

You could also use tools like Answer the Public or Semrush. Chat GPT could also provide some insight on commonly asked questions.

The benefits of having a Frequently Asked Questions page on your site

There are many reasons why you should have a Frequently Asked Questions page. Most importantly, having a well-organized FAQ page with quality content helps your audience get answers to their questions, which enhances customer engagement, improves customer experience, and starts to build your trust and credibility.

Another benefit of having an FAQ page is improving SEO results. Your FAQ section will include long-tail keywords that will match what your audience searches for. You will do keyword research to make sure this happens 😉. You have now increased the chance that you show up in search results for those questions.

When search engines see that your website is a resource where people find answers to their questions you may even get featured in the snippets section which will give you another opportunity to get found.

Having an FAQ page can also help reduce your customer service inquiries. A lot of people will try to find answers on their own before reaching out to you.

To make sure you are optimizing your FAQ page let’s go over a few best practices.

Best practices for writing your FAQ page

  1. Keep your FAQ page updated and current. Update it as your service(s) or product(s) change. Consider adding additional questions that your audience asks. Encourage your audience to submit questions to you.
  2. Make it conversational. Write this section like you’re talking with a friend. Make your answers easy to understand.
  3. Link to other pages on your site. This helps your user get more detailed information, stay on your page longer, and improve your SEO.
  4. Make your FAQ page appealing, well-organized, and easy to read.
    1. Add images, videos, and infographics.
    2. Add a search bar or collapsible sections to improve organization and readability.

Do you see how a Frequently Asked Questions page is a Powerhouse now? It’s a win-win. You get an additional opportunity for SEO content and your users get answers to their questions. If you don’t have one already I encourage you to add one and if you do, check on it and make sure it is up to date.

How Do I Know If My FAQ Page is working?

To know how your Frequently Asked Questions page is working you need to look at your analytics. In Google Search Console you can see the queries that you have been shown in the results for and what position you were in. You want to see yourself in the top 10 results. It will also tell you if you were shown in a snippet.

Another place you can look is Google Analytics. This will give you more detailed information about traffic on your page. You want to see that you got traffic and that the bounce rate for that page is low, which means users found what they were looking for. You can also see where users went on your site before or after they were on the FAQ page.

Use this information to confirm that your page is adding value to your audience and helping your SEO. If you don’t see these signs then make small changes, give them time (a few weeks at least) and check back in on your analytics.
